My entry for the Game Boy Showdown 2023 Game Jam.
"Finally, a quiet place" is a short narrative game made with GB Studio.
The player is a young kid locked inside his old family house. He finds the key to open the front door but, it's alive!
They then explore the house together and create a bound.
The player can interact with every elements of the different rooms to trigger dialogues that unfold the story. After finding the key, he can interact again with everything to trigger new dialogues with more informations on the characters.
Watch a Walkthrough by Youtuber Pesmori plays.
Made in 3 days for the Game Boy Showdown 2023 with the thematic of "Friendly". I sticked to a simple gameplay to focus on writing dialogues and creating an interesting environment that can be fully investigated.
Playable in any web browser on PC and mobile.
Sound design: The clocks sounds
I wanted to create a friendly but unsettling mood to make the player feel alone and to emphasize the relationship with the talking key.
I came up with the idea of the "tic tac" sounds of the clocks to create a heavy silence. I made a variation for each room to make it more interesting.
For example, the clock sound has an echo in the bathroom and comes from far away when in the Attic. I also made more subtle variations to create discomfort in the hallway and the living room by changing the rhythm and the notes.
This solution was really quick to set up and way faster than composing an interesting looping melody. Perfect for my short deadline!
Play the game on your phone to turn it into a GameBoy.
